The city was founded in 1265 by Přemysl Otakar II of Bohemia. It's located in the centre of the South Bohemian region. The most important historical sights of České Budějovice are the square (the fountain and the stone), the townhall, the Black Tower, St. Nicholas Cathedral, the museum, the Hardmuth´s villa (nowadays a house for kids and teenagers), the horse - drawn railway, the town fortification, Cathedral of Sacrifice of Virginia Marie of České Budějovice and the Salthouse. In the centre of the square there is a historical fountain with the statue of Samson on the top.
