Ponds of South Bohemia

South Bohemian region is typical for the highest number of ponds in the Czech Republic.

The ponds were artificially created water tanks intended for fish breeding.The first written mentions of fish farming in our region are from 11th and 12th century. The most well-known names for creating ponds and fish breeding are Mikuláš Ruthard from Malešov, Štěpánek Netolický and Jakub Krčín from Jelčany and Sedlčany. Nowadays there are about 300 ponds in South Bohemia.
